This March, we're offering our Safety Check Package at half price — just $39 (normally $79) at any Electrify NZ store. It's available for any e-bike, not just bikes purchased from us. More on that below — but first, here's why regular servicing matters.
Most people remember to charge their e-bike. Far fewer remember to service it.
It's understandable. E-bikes feel low-maintenance — there's no oil to change, no WOF to worry about, and they just keep going. But underneath that effortless ride is a machine with brakes, tyres, bearings, bolts, and a drivetrain that all wear down over time. And because e-bikes are heavier and faster than regular bikes, those components work harder and wear out quicker than you might expect.
A regular check-up catches small problems before they become expensive ones — or worse, dangerous ones.
What actually wears out on an e-bike?
Brakes. This is the big one. E-bikes are significantly heavier than regular bikes, and most riders travel at higher average speeds. That means your brakes are doing a lot more work on every ride. Brake pads wear down gradually, and it's not always obvious until stopping distances start to increase. By that point, you may also be wearing down your brake rotors, which are more expensive to replace. A regular brake adjustment and pad assessment is one of the most important things you can do for your safety.
Tyres. E-bike tyres cop more punishment than standard bike tyres — more weight, more speed, more braking force. Worn tyres reduce grip, increase the chance of punctures, and affect handling. Under-inflated tyres are also a common issue — they make the bike feel sluggish, reduce your range, and increase wear on the tyre itself. Keeping tyres at the correct PSI and checking for wear and damage should be a regular habit.
Bolts and fixings. Vibration from riding gradually loosens bolts. On a regular bike this matters. On an e-bike — which is heavier and often ridden over longer distances — it matters more. Loose bolts on handlebars, stems, seat posts, and axles can lead to sudden and dangerous failures. A systematic bolt check is quick to do professionally and easy to overlook at home.
Chain and drivetrain. The motor puts extra load on your chain, cassette, and chainring. A worn chain doesn't just affect gear shifting — it accelerates wear on the cassette and chainring too, turning a cheap fix into an expensive one. Keeping the chain clean, lubricated, and replaced before it stretches too far will save you money in the long run.
Electrical system. Bosch, Shimano, and other quality motor systems are generally very reliable, but they do benefit from occasional software updates and contact cleaning. Corrosion on electrical connections can cause intermittent issues that are frustrating to diagnose. A professional service can check these and update your system firmware where applicable.
How often should you get your e-bike serviced?
As a general guide:
- After the first 6 months - new bikes bed in during the first few hundred kilometres. Cables stretch, brakes settle, and bolts may need retightening. A service at this point catches all of that.
- Every 12 months after that — or sooner if you're a heavy rider, commuting daily, or riding in wet or muddy conditions. An annual service keeps everything running safely and smoothly, and is usually enough for most riders.
- Between services — keep an eye on your tyre pressure, listen for unusual noises, and test your brakes regularly. If something doesn't feel right, don't wait for the next scheduled service.
What's in a safety check?
Our Safety Check Package covers the essentials:
- Brake adjustment and brake pad assessment
- Tyre inspection for wear and damage, inflated to correct PSI
- Full bolt safety check
It's designed as a quick health check for your bike — the kind of thing that takes our technicians a short time but gives you peace of mind that the critical safety items are sorted. If anything needs further attention, we'll let you know with a quote before doing any additional work.
